Scattered and Splattered (IF)

The word of the week at Illustration Friday is Scattered...or was it Splattered? :) I decided to add both words to my sketchbook. When it came to "scatter", I couldn't help but think of the weather people and their "chance of scattered showers and storms" AND that little icon they use to represent "it" in the forecast! And splatter, well, I just felt like having some fun with the watercolors.

Current projects include revamping both "Free Range" (the pony and chicken below) and "Scooter Bunnies" (an Easter card).

Currently re-working the drawing...I think the chicken could use a little more character in the face, and I might change up the background a bit (just because I'm a bit bored by it now). The pony has already been jazzed up!

A mini painting of the image had me second guessing the "heavy" application of watercolor. I missed seeing my drawing! I quickly sketched another partial horse in pen and ink. I then scanned it in over the old painting via Photoshop. Viola! That's more like it!

My "In Flight" sketchbook has been sent to Brooklyn, NY! Shown are a few of my final sketchbook entries along with a snip-it from the SP website.

Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country. After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.

28838 artists from 94 countries around the world are participating. The tour starts February, 2011.

Free Range

Illustration Friday's topic this week? Chicken. I immediately thought of the variety of eggs one can purchase at the market (Cage Free, Free Range, Organic, Omega 3, All Natural Veggi Fed...) and that movie, Open Range, came to mind. So there you have it...A true, Free Range, chicken.

Of course I just checked out the IF topic this afternoon...so all you get is pencil. I would like to add color at some point, and add this to my private collection.

All my stars must shine on winter nights! Haha! I can't help it! The stars must radiate their sparkle in all my illustrations!

Still more cards to come...the search for a holiday retail job (whaaah!) has been taking up too much of my precious (and often perfectionistic) creative time! Any way, I shall continue to plug away and hope that all my holiday cards come to life for you to see!

Finished Holiday Cards (Yay!)

I was commissioned to create two USO holiday cards for a friend of my brother's. I hope the local base she volunteer's at will consider purchasing some for their shop too!

The snowman is actually a card I made last year for my parents. I decided to upgrade it in Photoshop before releasing it to the public this year. :)

I'm not sure if there will be type on the front of these cards just yet...or what kind of "Season's Greeting" will be inside, but at least the artwork is done!

My next post will have two more completed cards, as well as my other "in progress" holiday work.

"Sketchbook Project - In Flight - Michigan"

Finally, I have uploaded some of my sketchbook art from MI! The images do appear below in random order (not by choice), and are all a part of my "In Flight" Sketchbook Project. For more info. as to what the Sketchbook Project is, just click on the icon in the right column.

"In Flight" is the theme I chose (every participant had to choose one from a list of titles provided) because of the current "flight" I consider myself to be on. I received the sketchbook in the mail right before heading off to MI, so it only made sense I start there.
There's a good chance I'll add another sketch or two (that sea moster still needs to be colored in. :)) to reflect upon my time MI, but then I will continue on with the current trials of being "in flight". Ah yes, the trials...there are many!

Breakfast (Illustration Friday)

The word this week on Illustration Friday is "Breakfast"....well naturally the first thing I think of is PILLZ! Haha! Yes, every morning I like my am meal with a side of vitamin supplements and a "chill" pill.

I knew right away for "Breakfast" that I wanted to construct a paper collage...starting with that fabulous tile paper in the background! After cutting and pasting all the bottles together, along with the flowers (wrapping paper) and mug ( I did not draw on it that's just how the paper looks!), I scanned everything into Photoshop so I could easily play with the composition. I had a glass of water with ice cubes (which I loved) cut out, but it just wasn't working for me once I had it scanned in. Instead it became a vase in one image.

In the end, I couldn't decide which image I liked best...although flowers in the coffee mug might not make sense to most, for my breakfast routine, it totally would. :)

Diary ~ Illustration Friday

So much for IRE (see last post)! I couldn't get it together...nothing was working for me...which was frustrating (and I liked the photoshopped image I created as is for another "diary" entry).

Anyway, I started to imagine what I might look like when I can't get the "creative" out. Many drawings and doodles later, I went with the image above.

Below is myself (with a bemused frown face) working on "Diary". Mowgli looks on with concern. ;)

Feeling Green

Currently working on "Diary" for Illustration Friday.

I kept a small journal while in IRE this past May. I was pretty good about writing in it every day when on the tour bus. I decided to create a little photo collage in Photoshop highlighting some of my favorite photos from the vacation. I found there were too many I wanted to include!

For "Diary", I'd like to create one illustration using paper collage, and the other using watercolor and color pencil. Below is the sketch I made before I started messing around in Photoshop. We'll see what happens! :)

I had many ideas for the word "Giant" this week, but around 3:30 pm this afternoon I scratched all of them after doodling a kid on a big wave. My brother and I always used to boogie board at the beach when we were little...I'm positive the waves were a lot bigger back then! ;)

In the Garden

I decided to take advantage of the slight drop in temperature this am, and snap

some photos of the garden!

I absolutely love having such a variety of blossoms to tend to this summer. I think the last time I had a garden to look after I was in high school...my parents let me carve out the smallest plot of land to plant tomatoes and squash. In late spring my mom and I would go to the local nursery and fill the car with flowering plants and vegi seedlings for the summer. In the days to follow we'd spend hours sprucing up various parts of the yard with our purchases. It was always a great time for us to spend together. :)

Blast from the Past

It's too hot in the apartment to be sitting at the art table today...my silly fan set up will only pull so much AC air from the bedroom to cool off the living room. I'm happy to sit at the computer today...it's a cool 72 degrees in here!

Currently looking through old files to find portfolio worthy pieces. Shame on me for not keeping things a bit more organized. Some files appeared to be damaged (luckily I can open them and re-save properly), while others saved where I'd least expect to find them! I will upload some more sketchbook art, and hopefully be able to link everything up to my Flickr account successfully too! This piece I posted is from college (my senior year)! One of my favorites to date...check back for a full portfolio tomorrow!

This is my "4th" so far...In the finished piece, there will be two children (silhouettes) holding sparklers (this entire idea was based on this great sparkler worthy paper I found!). The scan of this isn't as great as I hoped...I will have to try adjusting a few things to see if I can't get a better picture. Perhaps I'll complete this piece on Monday? :)

Tomorrow I'm off to Bristol, RI to celebrate the holiday with a friend and her family. We'll be right on the water (beach house!)...it should be a bit cooler there...I hope! Happy 4th!

Satellite (Illustration Friday)

The first thing that came to mind for "satellite" was this 8x8 piece of map craft paper I have. I thought I might draw (with black color pencil) the silhouettes of people and their mobile devices on this paper. I ended up drawing these two figures below on separate paper. I then decided to cut them out and thought I might paste them on top. Nope! I went with silhouettes...and I like the results!

Office girl no more...

Even though I'm not working in a office (woowhoo!), I still find myself sitting at the computer a few hours every day to take care of "business". Email, facebook, and my blog...today I'll be searching for images on the web to reference for my next assignments.

I also want to share my portfolio of work (sketchbook to finished pieces) on here! I just set up a FLICKR account, now I need to connect it to this blog...hmmm...I've already tried what I thought would work...no luck. Time to call upon friends for help (fellow bloggers)!

Busy busy with lots of ideas and stuff to wrap up before the 4th. My goal is to go "live" with this blog next week.

Marshmallows

Last night had me thinking 'bout S'mores. As the temperature and humidity slowly dropped, I thought it would be a great night to gather 'round a fire pit, and roast some marshmallows! The last time I did, I was with one friend who couldn’t help but roast two at a time, and let the flame ignite them on fire! She insisted she liked the crispy, black coating on her ‘mallows! I think she just didn’t have the patience to let them turn a golden brown!

The pets! They make the best early morning alarm clock, don't they?! Kiwi and Mowgli always bring a smile to my face first thing in the morning. They both demand I give them my full attention with "pets and pats", followed by food (Mowgli) and a trip outdoors (Kiwi). I wanted to capture this am routine in a sketch, for I'd like it to be a finished painting at some point in time! I couldn't help but picture Mowgli in a crown (photoshopped in), for he is the king of his own little jungle. Kiwi should have a princess tiara, for she is a puppy princess in her own right! We shall see...

From one sketch to another...

Yesterday's heat had me reflecting on a recent trip to the beach with my good friend Renee, and her daughter Stella. It was our first of many future trips to Duxbury beach, and the first of my many attempts to get a tan!!! Every summer I tell myself I'm not going to care if my Irish/Polish skin refuses to only sun burn rather than suntan. But then I see my old bottle of "SPF 4, 6, or 8 Spray Tan Oil", and can't resist the urge to "work on my tan this summer". Even if I do obtain a "tan", it shames in comparison to most around me. Oh well!

Once I finished my "Feets and the Beach" sketch, I had to laugh when I looked back at an old sketch of myself decked out in "winter work gear"! Some blustery and cold winter mornings I thought it would make sense to have a get up like this!

I want to be an Artist.

I am an artist though, right? I create art. I show it to people (sometimes!) and on occasion, I even sell it! Perhaps I am an artist, but I want to be a better one. By better I mean true to myself in what I create and share with the (future) readers of this blog. I often care too much what others will think, how they will perceive me and the work I’ve created, and feel I have to prove my time spent as an artist as justifiable. Well, that way of thinking just has to go if I want to succeed at being an artist! So here it begins, my journey to becoming the artist I’m meant to be! Fully exposed, whether the people like it or not!
